The Cathedral recently played host to the young students from the Sydney Conservatorium High School

Students from the Sydney Conservatorium High School with the Cathedral’s Director of Music, Jacinta Jakovcevic, and Principal Cantor, Joshua Adams

The students traveled to Perth to attend the 2018 Kodaly National Conference and sang for the 6pm Saturday evening Vigil Mass on Saturday 29th September at St Mary’s Cathedral.

Some of the works they sang included compositions of Palestrina and the ‘Missa Syllabica’ of Arvo Part (b. 1935).

The Sydney Conservatorium is one of Australia’s premier music institutes and these students are some of our brightest young musical talents in the country – it was wonderful for them to experience our music making here at the Cathedral and briefly be part of it. It’s also wonderful for them to experience these works which were written for the liturgy in its actual setting – both a faith experience and educational experience for them. The young students (many of them not Catholic) really seemed to appreciate and value this experience.

We Are St Mary’s

St Mary’s Cathedral stands as a place of faith, history, and community in the heart of Perth. More than just a landmark, it is a sacred space where generations have gathered to worship, celebrate, and find solace.
Rooted in tradition and open to all, we welcome everyone to experience the beauty of our liturgy, the warmth of our community, and the call to serve. Whether you come to pray, connect, or contribute, you are part of the living story of St Mary’s.
