First Communion

First Holy Communion Committment Mass

Dear Parents

Thank you for expressing your desire to have your child receive their First Holy Communion at St. Mary’s Cathedral. The reception of First Holy Communion is a very important moment in the life of a Catholic, since this is the first time that they receive the Body and Blood of Jesus as part of the worshipping community of God’s family.

Children normally make their First Holy Communion in year four, having made their First Reconciliation in year three. Please note that candidates for first communion need to have celebrated first penance/reconciliation.

In order to help your child understand the significance of this occasion, it is, of course, necessary for them to complete a period of preparation and formation. If your child attends one of our Catholic schools, the preparation is usually undertaken at the school. If your child is not in a Catholic school, s/he will need to attend the parish religious education program; please contact our Cathedral parish office to discuss this.

The Cathedral parish is committed to safeguarding. Please talk to children taking part in our programs about the Code of Conduct which helps us keep everyone safe.

All communion candidates will also need to take part in the events in the table below.
